🔥 Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) and the Fire
Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) courageously taught his people that lifeless idols could neither hear, help nor protect them. However, instead of accepting the truth, they became angry and decided to burn him.
They prepared a fire and threw Ibrahim (A.S.) into it—but Allah commanded:
“O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim.”
— Qur’an 21:69
By Allah’s command, the fire did not harm him. His enemies wanted to destroy him, but Allah defeated their plan and saved His faithful servant.

Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) and the Fire
A Detailed Story Based on the Qur’an
Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.) was one of Allah’s greatest prophets. Allah gave him wisdom and guided him from an early age:
“We had certainly given Ibrahim his sound judgement before, and We knew him well.”
— Qur’an 21:51
Ibrahim (A.S.) Questions Idol Worship
Prophet Ibrahim’s people worshipped idols and celestial objects instead of Allah. Ibrahim (A.S.) understood that objects which could not hear, speak, help or protect anyone could not be worthy of worship.
He asked his father, Azar:
“Do you take idols as gods? Indeed, I see you and your people in manifest error.”
— Qur’an 6:74
He spoke respectfully to his father and asked why he worshipped something that could neither hear nor see nor provide any benefit. He invited him to follow the guidance Allah had given him.
However, his father rejected his message and threatened to punish him. Ibrahim (A.S.) did not respond disrespectfully. He said:
“Peace be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord.”
— Qur’an 19:47
This teaches us that even when people reject the truth, we should speak with wisdom and good manners.
The Signs of the Stars, Moon and Sun
Allah showed Ibrahim (A.S.) the greatness of the heavens and the earth so that he would possess firm faith.
When night came, Ibrahim saw a star. He said, as part of his argument against his people’s beliefs, “This is my lord.” But when the star disappeared, he declared that he did not love things that disappeared.
He then saw the moon rising. When it set, he explained that without Allah’s guidance, a person would go astray. When he saw the sun, he pointed out that it was greater, but when it also set, he rejected everything his people associated with Allah.
He announced:
“Indeed, I have turned my face toward the One who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not of those who associate others with Allah.”
— Qur’an 6:79
Ibrahim (A.S.) was demonstrating that stars, the moon and the sun were created objects. They appeared and disappeared according to Allah’s command; therefore, they could not be gods.
Ibrahim (A.S.) Challenges His People
Ibrahim asked his people:
“What are these statues to which you are devoted?”
— Qur’an 21:52
They replied that they had found their forefathers worshipping them. This was their main justification: they were simply following the customs of previous generations.
Ibrahim clearly told them that both they and their forefathers had been in obvious error. His people were surprised and asked whether he had brought the truth or was merely joking.
Ibrahim answered that their true Lord was the Lord of the heavens and the earth—the One who had created everything. He declared that he was among those who testified to this truth.
Ibrahim (A.S.) Breaks the Idols
When the people went away, Ibrahim (A.S.) approached their idols. According to Surah As-Saffat, he found food placed before them and asked:
“Will you not eat? What is wrong with you that you do not speak?”
— Qur’an 37:91–92
The idols obviously could not answer.
Ibrahim then broke the idols into pieces, leaving the largest one intact. His purpose was to make the people think about the helplessness of the objects they worshipped.
When the people returned and saw their idols destroyed, they became furious. They asked:
“Who has done this to our gods? Indeed, he is surely one of the wrongdoers.”
— Qur’an 21:59
Some people remembered hearing a young man named Ibrahim speaking against the idols. They decided to bring him before everyone so that the people could witness the questioning.
Ibrahim’s Powerful Argument
When Ibrahim (A.S.) was brought before them, they asked whether he had destroyed their gods.
He replied:
“Rather, this—the largest of them—did it. So ask them, if they can speak.”
— Qur’an 21:63
Ibrahim was exposing the contradiction in their beliefs. They considered the idols powerful gods, but they already knew that those idols could not speak, move or defend themselves.
For a brief moment, they turned to themselves and admitted that they were the ones acting unjustly. But instead of accepting the truth, they returned to their stubbornness.
They said to Ibrahim:
“You certainly know that these do not speak.”
— Qur’an 21:65
Ibrahim then asked why they worshipped things besides Allah that could neither benefit nor harm them. He expressed his rejection of their idols and asked why they did not use their reason.
His argument had completely defeated them. They could not answer him logically, so they resorted to violence.
The Decision to Burn Ibrahim (A.S.)
The people said:
“Burn him and support your gods, if you are going to act.”
— Qur’an 21:68
Surah As-Saffat also records their decision:
“Build for him a structure and throw him into the blazing fire.”
— Qur’an 37:97
They wanted to punish Ibrahim and defend the false gods that could not defend themselves. They believed the fire would destroy him and silence his message.
However, they had forgotten that fire itself was only a creation of Allah. It could burn only by His permission.
Allah Commands the Fire
When Ibrahim (A.S.) was placed in the fire, Allah protected him with a miraculous command:
“O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim.”
— Qur’an 21:69
Allah did not merely command the fire to become cool; He commanded it to become both cool and safe for Ibrahim. By Allah’s will, the same fire that normally burned became harmless.
The people had intended to harm Ibrahim, but Allah defeated their plan:
“They intended for him harm, but We made them the greatest losers.”
— Qur’an 21:70
Surah As-Saffat similarly explains:
“They intended against him a plan, but We made them the lowest.”
— Qur’an 37:98
The fire could not harm Ibrahim because Allah—the Creator of fire—had commanded it to be safe.
Ibrahim’s Migration
After Allah saved him, Ibrahim (A.S.) left his people and migrated for the sake of his faith.
He said:
“Indeed, I am going to my Lord; He will guide me.”
— Qur’an 37:99
Allah saved Ibrahim and Prophet Lut (A.S.) and guided them toward the blessed land:
“We delivered him and Lut to the land which We had blessed for all people.”
— Qur’an 21:71
Allah later blessed Ibrahim with righteous descendants, including Ishaq and Ya‘qub, and made prophets among his family.
Important Lessons
1. Worship Allah Alone
Only Allah creates, controls, benefits and protects. Anything that cannot hear, speak or defend itself is unworthy of worship.
2. Do Not Follow Traditions Blindly
Ibrahim’s people followed their ancestors without examining whether their beliefs were true. Islam teaches us to follow evidence and divine guidance.
3. Speak the Truth Courageously
Ibrahim (A.S.) stood for the truth even when an entire community opposed him.
4. Use Wisdom and Reason
He encouraged his people to think about their beliefs. If the idols could not speak or protect themselves, how could they be gods?
5. Trust Allah in Every Trial
From a human perspective, escape from such a fire appeared impossible. But Ibrahim trusted Allah, and Allah protected him miraculously.
6. Everything Obeys Allah
Fire naturally burns, but its nature operates only under Allah’s authority. When Allah commanded it to become cool and safe, it obeyed.
7. Anger Is Not an Answer to the Truth
When Ibrahim’s people could not defeat his argument, they tried to kill him. Their violence showed that they had no truthful response.
